A PARISH councillor has warned motorists to keep an eye out for a gaggle of geese using the village's roads after one of the birds flew straight into his car.

Councillor Tony Maw, who chairs Oxenhope Parish Council, said about 20 geese lived in a mill pond off Jew Lane, and regularly walked across nearby roads, putting themselves at risk of being hit by passing vehicles.

Drivers not wanting to "fall fowl" of the birds are advised to slow down and be ready for any potentially erratic behaviour by the geese.

Cllr Maw said on one occasion one of the birds took off and accidentally flew into the front of his car.

"I stopped and got out, but fortunately he was okay," he said.

"In another incident earlier this year I had to stop again because there was one goose walking down the middle of the road. When I stopped so did he. So I had to get out to encourage it out of the way."

Cllr Maw said he had requested warning signs for Jew Lane from Bradford Council, though added he was not sure whether the local authority had special roadside "goose warning" signs in stock.

"Local people would be aware of the geese, but there are people from outside the village who drive through here and aren't so familiar with them," he said.

"There are geese on Leeming Reservoir as well, but those ones don't go onto the road.

"The ones on Jew Lane have grown in number over the last few years. They are wild - I don't think anyone is breeding them, so they just go wherever they want."

Bradford Council has not yet commended on the situation.
