A WOMAN from the district is tackling the gruelling Yorkshire Three Peaks – barefoot!

Anna May will shed her shoes for the 24-mile charity trek, which takes in the summits of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

Her mammoth challenge, on August 23, is in aid of international development work charity Progressio.

The 24-year-old temp worker admits that completing the frightening feat will not be easy.

"Most people just think I'm a bit crazy!" said Anna, of Ridgemount Road, Riddlesden.

"I wanted to do something different to raise money.

"A lot of people walk the Yorkshire Three Peaks for charity but I'm not aware of anyone who has attempted it barefoot!

"I have climbed two of the peaks before, but with shoes on.

"At the moment I'm walking around the house and up and down the street shoeless to get used to it and I'll step up the training as the challenge approaches.

"I'm going to be trying to find as many grassy areas as possible to walk on around the route.

"At least with no shoes on my feet won't rub so blisters shouldn't be a problem!"

In October, Anna is heading to Nicaragua for ten weeks with Progressio – part of International Citizen Service (ICS), which brings young people together to fight poverty.

She will be working with a team of local and UK volunteers on a number of environmental projects.
