A CRASH landing by a light aircraft at Oxenhope Airfield has been blamed on a sudden gust of wind.

The 2002 Jabiru aircraft had touched down on the main wheels when a gust lifted the right wing and caused the nose to drop, according to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

The aircraft ended up upside down but the pilot was unhurt. The crash happened on the afternoon of March 10 this year.

The owner of the plane is listed as Anthony Levitt of Strines Clough Farm, Blackshaw Head, Hebden Bridge.

The pilot, who was 67, is not named in the air crash investigation report.

The report says the pilot abandoned his first landing attempt as he was too high because of thermal activity.

On the second attempt, the aircraft drifted to the left after a gust lifted a wing.

The report concludes: "On contact with the ground, the nose leg collapsed, the propeller struck the ground and the aircraft tipped over onto its back.

"The pilot, who had been wearing a lap and diagonal harness, was unhurt and he vacated the aircraft unaided."
