FRIGHTENED Residents have voiced their concerns after a string of dog attacks in Keighley.

A Japanese Akita-type dog has reportedly attacked several people and other dogs in the Highfield area.

Among those targeted was 70-year-old Barry Brewood and his seven-year-old Jack Russell-whippet cross, Lady.

The retired artist and lecturer was walking Lady at Burgess’ Field, a popular site with children and dog owners, when the dangerous animal struck.

“I lashed out at the Akita and tried to keep between the two dogs but it bit Lady, causing a wide open gash,” said Mr Brewood, of Highfield Lane.

“It also had a go at me but I made myself big and just ended up with a mark on my arm.

“I’m not frightened of dogs, but a lot of youngsters use that playing field and I’m concerned it will attack them and we’ll end up with a tragedy on our hands. Something needs to be done before somebody is seriously hurt or worse.”

Lady was taken to the vets and put on a course of antibiotics following the savage attack.

“Because of the position of the wound they weren’t able to stitch it,” said Mr Brewood. “Lady was in shock for a couple of days after the attack and is now very timid and wary when we are out.”

He reported the incident, which happened at about 8am on February 8, to the police and Bradford Council’s dog warden service.

Police confirm they did attended that morning but were unable to locate the Akita. They were also called to a similar incident in the same area later that day, and reports of attacks were being made on social media up to Tuesday of this week.

“Further inquiries revealed several people in the area own dogs matching the description of the one involved,” said Sgt Neil Twitchett, of the Keighley Area Neighbourhood Team.

“Each owner has since been advised of their responsibilities.”

Bradford Council said the matter had been left in police hands.

Social media postings say there have been many similar incidents in the neighbourhood in recent weeks, with dogs and owners being bitten.

Keighley town councillor Amjid Ahmed, who represents the Highfield ward, said he is extremely concerned to hear about the attacks.

“It is a very serious issue, which needs to be thoroughly investigated and appropriate action taken,” he added.
