A SEVEN-A-SIDE football tournament in Keighley raised £1,500 to help victims of fighting in the Gaza Strip.

The event, at Marley playing fields, was arranged by members of the North region branch of the Greater Sylhet Welfare and Development Council.

Highfield resident Fulzar Ahmed, one of the co-ordinators of the tournament, said: "The turnout was great. This event was sponsored by local businesses, and without their generous support it would not have been possible.

"We'd like to thank all participants, volunteers and sponsors for making the occasion a success."

Eighteen teams took part, including sides from Bradford, Keighley, Leeds and Oldham. The tournament was won by BACCA, from Leeds, who beat Keighley outfit AC Milan 2-0 in the final.

Aroj Ali, the welfare and development council's North region sports co-ordinator, said: "It was a beautiful day. A lot of people got involved with helping us out and there must have been about 300 people there."

He said the money raised would be given Al-Imdaad Foundation charity, which has been working to help Palestinians affected by the Gaza conflict.
