Ilkley Film Society focusses on South Pole

A film society will commemorate the centenary of Captain Scott’s tragic expedition to the South Pole with a special event.

Ilkley Film Society will mark 100 years since Scott and his companions Oates, Wilson, Bowers and Evans, died on their return trek from the pole in 1912, with a special showing of the film The Great White Silence.

The film was created in 1924 from footage shot in Antarctica in 1911 by Herbert Ponting, a photographer and film-maker who accompanied Scott’s party until the final push to the pole. The film has been restored with the original colour tinting by the National Film Archive.
