Man and boy quizzed by detectives in rape inquiry

A 20-year-old man and a boy, aged 16, were last night being quizzed by detectives investigating the rape of a 14-year-old girl walking her dog in Ilkley.

The pair, who live in the Bradford area, were being held at an undisclosed police station for questioning about the attack in Middleton Woods on Sunday afternoon.

The woods were sealed off by police after the attack while forensic teams combed the area for evidence.

Detectives said the girl had been followed into the woods after she had been walking her dog in the busy riverbank area as she made her way home.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Oddy, of West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Inquiry Team, is leading the investigation.

Police have appealed for help from the large number of people who had been in and around the area of the New Bridge Street bridge and the Ilkley Skate Park at the time.

Det Chief Insp Oddy said the traumatised schoolgirl, who cannot be identified, was being cared for by officers.

He said: “The girl is understandably upset by her ordeal and is being cared for by family and specially-trained officers.”

An incident room has been set up as part of the investigation.

Anyone with information that could help the inquiry has been urged to contact the incident room on (01274) 376104 or ring Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
