A FORMER PUPIL of Ilkley Grammar School is now the captain of the Royal Navy’s amphibious warship HMS Albion.

Captain Tim Neild has taken command of the 18,500 tonne assault ship which is now undergoing sea trials after a two-year, extensive, refit programme which has upgraded the ship's weapons, radars and propulsion.

“It’s an enormous privilege to command of the UK’s high-readiness amphibious ship and lead a team of highly trained and extremely professional sailors and Royal Marines,’’ he said.

Cpt Neild joined the Royal Navy 26 years ago as a warfare officer, after completing his A-levels and his career has seen him at the forefront of UK naval operations in warships and land headquarters.

He has commanded warships at every level, including the patrol vessels, HMS Express and Pursuer, the mine hunter HMS Quorn, and the frigate HMS Argyll, as well as holding senior positions in the amphibious task group protecting the UK’s interests worldwide – both partner nations and international shipping trade routes.

He said: “The Royal Navy continues to provide me with real adventure and opportunities that I could not have imagined when I joined. Its strength remains the diversity and professionalism of its people and their courage and commitment to succeed whatever the mission - I am inspired by them every day.’’

On completion of sea trials over the summer, the ship will undertake operational sea training with the Flag Officer Sea Training Organisation where she will be put through her paces before starting duties as the UK’s high-readiness amphibious ship by the end of the year.

This training will prepare the ship ready to deploy anywhere in the world at short notice to conduct a wide range of roles in support of UK Government priorities.
