CROWDS gathered in Ilkley to watch the second annual Town Centre Cycle Races.

The circuit, based around The Grove, was lined with spectators once again, a year on from the first event when it formed part of the build-up to the Tour de France Grand Depart.

Roads were closed from 4.30pm to 10pm to allow the field of riders to take part in four races.

Scot Thwaites, of Burley-in-Wharfedale, was among the elite riders lining up for the Lister Horsfall Grand Prix at 7pm. This was preceded by under-14 and under-16 races.

The women’s AvantiGas race at 7.45pm featured a field of riders that was 25 per cent up on 2014’s inaugural event. The 1.5km route took in The Grove and Riddings Road hill, and was open to both elite riders and those newer to the sport.

The event rounded off with a prize presentation at 9.55pm.

The evening also boosted Ilkley’s economy, with food and drink stalls available to spectators.
