SEVERAL fire crews had to be called in to rescue a woman who became cut off by rising water while walking her dogs.

The incident happened at Beanlands Island in Ilkley, at around 1.15pm today, when waters from the River Wharfe began to rise.

Five fire crews and paramedics were called to the area when it became clear the woman, aged in her 60s, could not get back to safety with her two dogs.

Firefighters worked with paramedics to assess the woman's condition and used an inflatable boat to cross the river and return her to safety.

Crews then returned to rescue her two dogs, with the whole operation taking less than an hour to complete.

A fire crew from Ilkley was joined by crews from Brighouse, Otley and Leeds, in addition to a team trained and equipped for water rescue operations from the Bingley station.
