THE SECOND of two strongly-opposed housing developments in Menston is recommended for approval by Bradford councillors tomorrow.

Campaigners in Menston Action Group (MAG), which is waiting to hear the outcome of a judicial review application over the Derry Hill housing plan, will head to Bradford City Hall as the council’s regulatory and appeals committee makes its decision on a detailed plans for a 137-home development on Bingley Road.

An outline planning application was approved by Bradford Council in April 2013.

The committee heard representations by MAG in October, and agreed to MAG’s offer to pay for an independent report on flooding issues in Menston. Councillors were not satisfied with the drainage details submitted as part of the application about potential flood risks.

The group hopes the report, by Dr Duncan W Reed, will result in the plans by developer Taylor Wimpey being rejected.

But officers have recommended that councillors approve the plans, subject to conditions including the provision of 41 affordable housing units on the site, and more than £1 million in contributions to education infrastructure, public transport improvements, better walking and cycling routes to Menston Station, and the improvement of recreation facilities in Menston and Burley-in-Wharfedale.

The independent study has been reviewed by Bradford Council’s drainage officers, and a lengthy report on its findings is to go before the committee.

Officers are asking for the developer to pay a commuted sum of £557,669 towards the improvement of both primary and secondary school educational infrastructure in the area.
