RESTAURANT giant Pizza Express has lodged an appeal after being refused permission to put up a new sign at its Ilkley eatery.

The firm’s plan to put up a new pole-mounted sign at the restaurant, in Station Plaza, was rejected by Bradford Council in September.

At the time, one objector, ward councillor Martin Smith (Con, Ilkley), said the restaurant already had plenty of signage. He said: “This is a listed building not a funfair.”

But Pizza Express is now appealing to Government planning inspectors. Its appeal letter said its sign had been designed to fit in with existing signs at nearby Laura Ashley and M&S shops.

It says: “We felt our sign fitted in nicely with the surrounding area (helping) Pizza Express customers to locate this site comfortably and easily.”

The application also includes plans for a Pizza Express-branded parasol, although the firm queries whether permission is needed for this item at all.
