GUIDES in Burley-in-Wharfedale are holding a fundraising coffee morning on Saturday in aid of the Toilet Twinning charity.

The 1st Burley-in-Wharfedale Guides will hold their coffee morning at the Scout & Guide HQ, Peel Place, Burley, from 9.30am to 11.30am.

There will be cakes for sale as well as Christmas crafts, soaps, cards, jewellery, sweets & games. Everyone is welcome.

For every £60 raised they can ‘twin’ a toilet in Africa. A compostable latrine can be built with the villagers help where women and children will be safe from infection and harm.

The guides are trying to provide safe places, particularly for women and girls, in Africa to go to the toilet. Some villages have no sanitation, meaning women and girls are forced to go to the edges of their community to squat in the open, late at night.

They are vulnerable from attack and snake bites, and there are no hand washing facilities.

Nearly one in five child deaths each year is due to diarrhoea.

Every minute three children under the age of five die because of poor sanitation and dirty water.
