An investigation has been launched after a hospital ward for mental health patients was evacuated when a fire took hold in a mattress.

Firefighters from Keighley and Silsden were called to the Airedale Centre for Mental Health in the grounds of Airedale Hospital at Steeton, near Keighley.

A patient was led to safety as two firefighters using breathing apparatus tackled the burning mattress in a bedroom. Other patients and staff were also evacuated safely, said a spokesman for Bradford District Care Trust.

Keighley fire station crew commander Darren Creighton said the bedroom had been badly damaged. He said the cause of the blaze, which was confined to one room, was under investigation.

“Smoke alarms alerted staff who led the gentleman to safety,” he added.

No-one was injured in the incident on Tuesday night.
