A grandmother has told how she fled her home while clutching her four-year-old grandson following an arson attack in Keighley.

Lisa Meegan ran from the smoke-logged house in Bronte Drive, Oakworth, with young Macensie after someone pushed burning paper through her letterbox. Mrs Meegan, 38, said: “I woke up and opened my bedroom door and the smoke alarm hadn’t gone off but there was smoke coming up the stairs.

“I rang my mother-in-law and she told me to get out as soon as possible, so I wrapped my grandson up in a coat and dashed through.”

Firefighters from Keighley were called to the house at 10pm last night.

Mrs Meegan was left “shocked” and was given oxygen therapy by firefighters before being checked by paramedics. Her grandson was uninjured. Kal, a Labrador which belongs to Mrs Meegan and husband Keith, was also taken to safety outside the house.

Keighley watch commander, Nick Padwick, said: “We suspect somebody has stuffed some paper through the letterbox and set alight to it.

“It caused damage to the front door and some smoke-logging inside. The lady was in bed and, when she went to the bathroom, she noticed quite a lot of smoke. She was in quite a lot of shock.”

Neighbour Malcolm Hagyard said fire engines and an ambulance arrived quickly at the scene.

Detectives from Airedale and North Bradford are continuing their investigations. Witnesses should call Airedale and North Bradford CID on 0845 60 60 606 or CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.”
