An updated copy of a movie that has won iconic status is to be unveiled to mark the 40th year since it was shot.

The original footage of The Railway Children, filmed along the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in 1970 and starring Jenny Agutter, is being digitally re-mastered.

Co-stars Bernard Cribbins and Sally Thomsett, along with Keighley MP Ann Cryer, who was an extra in the movie, went back on location at the steam line’s Oakworth station, to be interviewed for the new version by film distributor Optimum Releasing.

The newly-restored film will premiered at the Bradford International Film Festival on Sunday, March 28, before it is re-released in cinemas nationwide in April.

A DVD version will follow and be available in shops from May.

A spokesman for Optimum Releasing said the cast members gathered at Oakworth to share memories and experiences of making the film.

They included Graham Mitchell, who played the guard on the ‘Old Gentleman’s’ train and several members of the Haworth band who played on the station platform.

They were reacquainted with the locomotive, known as the Green Dragon, and the Old Gentleman’s Saloon.

“Interviews with the original stars, other cast and crew based outside of the region will take place in London and will form a special bonus feature to accompany a DVD version,” she said.

“There will be a series of unique and special events and activities taking place throughout the year as part of the celebrations.

“The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway will be holding a three-day event at Oakworth Station over the May Bank Holiday to coincide with The Railway Children celebrations.

“Visitors will be able to climb aboard The Green Dragon, blow the whistle of Sir Berkeley, take cream tea in the Old Gentleman’s Saloon and wave to The Railway Children as you pass by their fence.”

Visitors will also be able to take part in a guided tour of the film’s locations and re-enact of some of the films’ most famous scenes.
