Appeal decision on Yeadon village green is awaited

Attempts to strip Yeadon Banks of its protected village green status could go all the way to the European Court of Human Rights.

The man leading the campaign to protect the site said he had been told the landowners were willing to take the case to Strasbourg if necessary.

Doug Jones, who has successfully fought to get village green status for the 15-acre site, is waiting to find out whether Leeds Group will be given permission to take their case to the Supreme Court.

The company, which owns five acres of the site, is seeking leave to appeal to the highest court after losing an appeal last year.

Mr Jones said: “I really would like to see an end to this, but I understand that it may go as far as the court of human rights.”

Last week Leeds Group company secretary Malcolm Wilson said: “We remain of the view that the decision to register the land as a town or village green was wrong in law.”
