A paramedic claimed someone could have been killed by the latest incident in a village where campaigners want major road safety improvements.

A bus mounted the pavement and knocked down a metal set of traffic lights on Main Street near to the White Hart pub at about 6.20am in Pool-in-Wharfedale yesterday.

No one was injured in the accident, which caused a raft of traffic problems through the village, but one resident claimed it was a narrow escape.

Michael Good, who lives in the village and is a paramedic practitioner at Bradford ambulance station, said he believed anyone standing at the crossing at the time could have been killed.

And it is the second incident after a car crashed through a wall on Pool Bank New Road earlier in the month sparking the formation of the Safe Roads: Safe Lives campaign.

Residents, councillors and MP Greg Mulholland are all backing the campaign for road safety improvements on the two A-roads, the A658 and A659, which run through the village. Campaigners have warned it is only a matter of time before a pedestrian or someone in a car is killed travelling along the village’s narrow roads.

Mr Good said he had no doubt that if the accident had happened later then the likelihood of a pedestrian being killed would be very high, he said.

He said: “Any pedestrian who had been stood on the White Hart side of the crossing at the time would I believe have been killed instantly. The force of the accident was so powerful that debris could be found as far as the White Hart roundabout, including the light units themselves."
