Open inquest verdict on Horsforth man's death

An open verdict has been recorded on the death of a man who drowned in the River Aire.

Police appealed for information after Trevor Whittaker, 45, from Horsforth, was found dead in the river in May last year.

Mr Whittaker, who had an alcohol problem and suffered from mental health problems, was last seen alive in Rodley Lane.

His body was recovered from a stretch of the river near the Pollard Lane bridge on May 7 after police were called by passers-by.

An open verdict was recorded at a Leeds inquest last week after the court heard it was not clear what happened in the last moments of his life.

Months before his death Mr Whittaker had been moved from his home to a nursing home amid claims he had lost hundreds of pounds to a fraudster.

A West Yorskhire Police spokesman confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Whittaker’s death.
