Aireborough pupils' recycling challenge

Pupils at schools in Aireborough, Horsforth and parts of Wharfedale have taken up a challenge to recycle as many old Yellow Pages directories as possible.

The campaign, over the next six weeks, will see thousands of schoolchildren across Leeds taking part in the Yellow Woods Challenge - an environmental project run by Yellow Pages, working with the Woodland Trust and Leeds City Council.

More than 40 schools are expected to join in and those that recycle the most directories per pupil will win a share of £600 in cash prizes, with a £100 bonus prize going to the school that collects the most directories.

And for every pound awarded to the schools, Yellow Pages will give a matching pound to the Woodland Trust's UK tree planting programme.

Local schools signed up for the challenge include: Rawdon Littlemoor Primary School, Yeadon Westfield Junior and Infant Schools, Horsforth Newlaithes Junior School, St Joseph's RC Primary School, Otley, and SS Peter and Paul RC Primary School, Yeadon.

All the participating schools are receiving free educational materials about recycling during the campaign.

Pupils are being asked to bring in only the front cover of the directories they have collected, and to recycle the full book in their green bin at home, along with their household's normal recyclable waste.

The challenge will run until November 10.
