A desperately-ill youngster has been left “traumatised” after burglars raided his home, taking medical equipment and some of his most treasured possessions.

Zak Simpson’s complex condition, so rare it has no name, means he cannot swallow, he needs a wheelchair to get around and has behavioural problems.

The 14-year-old’s mother Simone Lawless said he has a mental age of six.

A nebuliser worth £200 was taken in the burglary, which happened while the family slept, between Tuesday night and yesterday morning, at their home in New Lane, Laisterdyke.

Miss Lawless said the thieves had also taken an Xbox, about 100 games, a laptop and a 50in plasma TV which Zak had saved up for years to buy himself.

She said: “He is absolutely traumatised. His games are his life, he doesn’t go out much and when he does he’s in a wheelchair and uses oxygen. I feel guilty, they have taken everything he owns. He sits in the house and plays his Xbox all day.

“He doesn’t really understand what has happened, he just knows his stuff’s not there and he doesn’t want to go to bed.”

Police believe whoever burgled the house got in by breaking a front door lock.

Detective Sergeant Martin Milner, of Bradford South CID, said: “To steal a device which is relied upon for medical purposes is a particularly selfish act and our inquiries are currently ongoing to trace those responsible.

“This particular item would be quite recognisable and distinctive to anyone who came across it.

“If you are offered any of these stolen possessions or have information which could assist officers in their investigations, please contact police immediately.

“I would also urge home owners to consider installing snap-proof locks, particularly on older UPVC doors.

“These can prevent anyone gaining access to your property if your lock is attacked.”
