Bradford Council is being asked to approve plans for new and replacement libraries at Haworth, Idle and Wyke, following a review of the service.

Consultants were called in and funded by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council to see where future improvements could be made across the district.

A report from the review will be discussed at the next meeting of the Council’s executive next Tuesday, and councillors will be asked to accept it.

In addition they will be asked about the creation of multi-function community hubs in Haworth, Idle and Wyke, as pilot schemes.

A new building would be needed in Haworth to include a new library for the village and a replacement community centre. In Idle the plan is to relocate the library to the Thorpe Methodist Church, which is up for sale, to create a new community facility.

And a replacement library for Wyke could be located within the Appleton Academy. In addition the old library building on Huddersfield Road could be sold.

In total the three new libraries are estimated to cost the Council £3.3 million.

The consultants met councillors, council officers and library users groups to build up a picture of the service. Improve-ments they recommend for the service include sharing library sites with other facilities, and piloting Library Link Points.

Councillor Anne Hawkes-worth, the Council’s executive member for environment and culture, said: “This review will allow us to look at how we can develop the service making best use of all available resources.”

The meeting takes place at City Hall, Bradford, at 2pm.
