The Bishop of Bradford has opened a new building and innovative play area – featuring an amphitheatre and a climbing tree – at a primary school.

The Right Reverend Nick Baines was at St Stephen’s Church of England Primary School, in West Bowling, to open the new building and play area yesterday.

The new building will provide the school with extra classrooms as it increases its capacity.

The play area also features a sensory path and planting and growing area.

Assistant head Tim Elcock said: “The Willow Building provides extra classrooms as we move from one to two form entry. But it’s also much more than that.

“There are two particularly exciting areas – the i-Quarter which contains five learning ‘pods’ promoting imaginative learning through technology, creativity and co-operation, and we’re particularly proud of a stunning new outdoor educational area for those in nursery and reception who prefer to learn outside.

“There’s a stage and mini-amphitheatre, a slide down a hill into a giant sandpit, a tree which children are welcome to climb, a den on stilts, a sensory path and a planting and growing area.”

The Rt Rev Baines spoke at the school assembly yesterday and was given a tour of the building.
