Poor parking near a Bradford school has prompted concerns over the safety of children in the area.

Peel Park Primary School hosted a meeting last night to discuss problem parking and driving in roads around the school in Peel Park Drive, Undercliffe.

Councillor David Gray (Lib Dem, Bolton and Undercliffe) said the parking was putting lives at risk, and parents were driving too fast when dropping off and collecting their children.

He said: “We have problems all over Bradford with ridiculous parking by parents of pupils who go to schools.

“At Peel Park it is horrendous, they just dump their cars basically.

“The last time I went down there I couldn’t believe the way they abuse the parking rules, and the speed they are driving when there are children knocking about.

“It’s very dangerous and it is putting children’s lives at risk, no doubt about that. A child is going to get badly injured.”

Steve Allan, community involvement and sustainability manager at Peel Park Primary, said the school had stopped allowing parents to park in its grounds after problems with the parking of a ‘handful’ of parents and a ‘couple of near misses’.

He said it became impossible for staff to police the car park at all times so the decision was taken to stop parking at the school altogether, apart from for parents of disabled children.

He said the school was looking at options to tackle the problem, including setting up a walking bus scheme and talking to parents of children who live very close to the school about walking instead of driving.
