Councillors have spoken of their safety concerns on a Bradford road where a woman suffered serious injuries when she was thrown from her car in a crash today.

The 27-year-old was driving a Volkswagen Polo which hit a lamppost in Harrogate Road, near the junction with Summerbridge Drive, in the Ravenscliffe area.

Councillors in the area said residents have spent years petitioning for road safety measures to be put in place there. Build-outs to help pedestrians cross the road and to slow drivers down are now under construction.

Councillor Ann Wallace (Lib Dem, Eccleshill) said: “There are a lot of concerns for safety on that road. People come round that corner much too fast.

“The corner of Ravenscliffe Avenue is where most of the accidents happen. We are trying to get traffic to slow down on that road. The roadworks there now are for build-outs to help people cross the road.

“There has been a petition ongoing for a number of years and it has took us at least two years to get this far.

“We are trying to get the speed limit reduced to 30 mph because it is 40mph at the moment, but they say we can’t do it because it is a dual carriageway.

“We have gotten the number of accidents down through education, providing the children at primary schools with road safety.”

Coun Wallace said there had been a catalogue of accidents on the road and the Council had struggled to find school crossing patrollers to work on certain stretches of the road because of safety fears.

Councillor Colin McPhee (Con, Eccleshill) said the most dangerous part of the road was by the entrance to Ravenscliffe Avenue.

He said: “We have been told in the past that we can’t just reduce the speed limit, which I don’t see why they can’t.

“It is a dangerous road – the speed doesn’t help and I don’t think the folks coming around he corners are actually slowing down, so if there’s anything in the road they aren’t going to be able to control the car to avoid an accident.

“Personally I would like to see the speed limit down to 30 mph.”

Police have appealed for information about the crash at about 8.40am as the Polo was being driven towards Apperley Bridge. A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the female driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary.

The spokesman said tonight: “She is now believed to be in a stable but poorly condition.”

Witnesses have been asked to contact PC John Lawson, at Keighley Road Traffic Unit, on 0845 6060606.
