Teenagers from Bradford who travelled to South Africa to work with children have created a DVD highlighting their experiences.

The group of young people spent ten days living and working with children in deprived townships in Khayamandi, 40 miles from Cape Town.

The trip for the 15-to-18-year-olds from Ravenscliffe, Eccleshill, Greengates and Bradford Moor was organised by Bradford Council’s Integrated Youth Support.

They stayed with families in townships and spent their days volunteering in a creche where they held arts and dance sessions and refurbished the play area. The aim of the trip was to raise awareness of cultural identity.

On returning, the group gave presentations to councillors, youth workers, young people, family and friends, and have now produced a DVD, The Bradford North South Africa Visit.

Nazaket Ali, Integrated Youth Support’s international trainer, who was one of the support workers on the excursion, said: “The trip was a real adventure for the young people and it has really opened their eyes to how children in other parts of the world live and have so little.

“The children loved the sessions, and were delighted with their new play area. One of the young people was moved to tears when one of the little girls was so excited about being given a new book - it was an emotional ten days for us all.”
