Hundreds of bikers were paying tribute today to a Bradford grandmother who liked nothing more than the open road.

Susan Peary, of Round Wood Avenue, Ravenscliffe, Bradford, was killed when the motorised trike on which she was a passenger was in collision with a car, flinging her against a stone bridge parapet near Kirkby Lons-dale in Cumbria.

Susan, 54, was out for the day with her partner of three years Alan Thackwray.

It was sunny and they were riding home on the A65 towards Ingleton when the Yamaha machine was in an accident with a Vauxhall Astra. She died at the scene.

Mr Thackwray, 57, suffered a broken ankle.

To celebrate her life, the family organised for up to 400 bikers, including her friends at Idle Bike and Trike Club, to follow the hearse as her coffin was tak-en from Greengates, through Thackley and Shipley, to Nab Wood Crematorium today.

Her son, David Bell, of Ravenscliffe, who had planned to take his mother on holiday to Spain this week, said: “She always loved her bikes. She grew up with them in the family.

“When the sun was out she was always out on her bike. She went to Bridlington and back a lot.”

Daughter Julie Bell, of Greengates, said her mother was fun-loving.

“She loved her social life, liked caravaning – she was a free spirit,” she said. “She had a lot of friends. She wouldn’t be able to walk down the street without stopping – she would stand talking for hours.”

A grandmother-of-five, Mrs Peary grew up in Wrose as one of four siblings. She attended Wrose infant and junior schools and Woodend School in Windhill. She had worked at the Co-op store in Wrose Road and at Baird Television in Windhill.

l Police said a 57-year-old Bradford man had been arrested and released on police bail on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in relation to the incident.

An inquest into Mrs Peary’s death will be held at a later date.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the accident, which occurred at about 3.40pm on Sunday, March 29, to contact them on (01524) 63333 or by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
