Gardening enthusiasts on a Bradford estate will soon be able to grow their own greens with the help of a new community project.

The Grow Your Own scheme, which developed from the Holme Wood Executive children’s gardening club, is designed to help youngsters and older people to work together.

The Holme View residential and day care centre, Gillingham Green, has opened up its grounds to provide four allotment plots, with raised bed areas, to be used by community-based organisations in the area.

Residents and representatives from organisations including Holme Wood Executive, Be Involved, and Springfield Gardens, have taken part in a “challenge day” to prepare the new allotment area and give Holme View’s front garden a makeover with weeding, new topsoil, and pruned bushes.

Also taking part were 50 employees from Provident Financial.

A second phase of work will create more allotment plots in Holme Wood at a later date.

The children’s gardening club, which was set up in July last year, will run again this summer.

For information phone Pam Riley at the Holme Wood Executive, on (01274) 652029.
