Heaton bounds to be beaten by Stanley King

5:00am Saturday 21st July 2012

Heaton’s Lord of the Manor Stanley King will beat the ancient boundaries of the township on Wednesday. He will lead the group from the top of Redburn Road, where they will meet at 5pm, through Heaton Woods to Heaton Royds. They will go across Northcliffe Golf Club and up to the junction of Long Lane and Bingley Road. Heaton township used to include Frizinghall and Sandy Lane, and the bounds are beaten to record them for each generation. Beating the Bounds ceremonies date back to a time before maps were commonplace. A parish vicar, churchwardens and other community leaders would head a crowd of boys who would beat the boundary markers with willow boughs. Interested people are invited to join the party.
