A 22-year-old man has been arrested in hospital after a crash that killed an 87-year-old man and injured six people including himself.

The arrested man, who was in a Vauxhall Vectra involved in a collision with a Suzuki car containing the pensioner and his family, has been released from hospital but was last night being held in custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Relatives of Ghulab Din, who was pronounced dead at the scene of Sunday’s accident in Toller Lane, were being comforted by a police.

Mr Din, of Hollins Road, Girlington, was a passenger in a Suzuki Alto that was being driven in the opposite direction to the Vauxhall, which was travelling from Bradford towards Bingley.

An inquest into his death was due to open today.

The 31-year-old driver of the Suzuki had to be airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with head injuries.

A 30-year-old woman, who was a backseat passenger, remained in Bradford Royal Infirmary last night with serious injuries.

A 12-year-old boy, who was with her and was seriously hurt, and a six-year-old girl, also a back seat passenger in the Suzuki, who suffered less serious injuries, were also in hospital.

Councillor Arshad Hussain (Lab, Heaton) said: “It’s just so sad. My heart goes out to the family.

“We have had many accidents and a fatality higher up on Haworth Road where we’ve been campaigning for speed cameras..”
