An 82-year-old man died despite frantic efforts by passers-by who gave first aid after he was in a collision with a car as he tried to cross a road in Keighley.

An ambulance crew arrived minutes later but the pensioner, named locally as Geoff Tidswell, could not be saved.

Mr Tidswell, of Sandbeds Farm, Trough Lane, Denholme, had seconds earlier left Bocking Working Men’s Club in Halifax Road.

He was crossing Halifax Road, near the junction with Worsted Road, when the incident, involving a Suzuki Swift, occurred at about 6.10pm on Monday.

Mr Tidswell was a long-standing member of the club where members spoke yesterday of being shocked and saddened by his death.

Secretary Terry Lambert said Mr Tidswell had been a regular at the club at tea-time.

“It’s dreadful, hard to believe what’s happened,” he said.

“I was talking with him at the bar – he was perfectly fine – he left and 20 seconds later he had died.”

Airedale and North Bradford Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened at rush-hour in wet and windy conditions, to contact the force’s Major Collision Enquiry Team on (01924) 293047.

They also want to speak to anyone who saw Mr Tidswell or the Suzuki Swift in the minutes before the incident.

l A 32-year-old Dewsbury man has been released on police bail following a crash at Broughton, near Skipton, on Monday, in which a Keighley motorcyclist died. The 55-year-old man was pronounced dead at Airedale General Hospital, Steeton, after a four-hour battle by medical staff to save him.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said inquiries were continuing into the incident between a black Kawasaki and a Ford Mondeo which were travelling in opposite directions on the A59 at 5.15am. Anyone with information should contact Traffic Constable Steve Beckwith, of Harrogate Road Policing Group, on 0845 60 60 24 7, quoting reference NYP-08112010-0045.
