A Royal Wedding street party cancelled in Bradford due to an arson attack is back on track – but needs help to fly the flags.

Clayton Estate Community Action Group had hoped to use the Friendship Centre in Thornaby Drive to make bunting and be a base for a street party celebrating Prince William and Kate Middleton’s marriage on Friday, April 29, but its plans were scuppered after arsonists struck.

Attempts had been made to break into a wooden hut next to the centre, known as The Cabin, before it was set alight and all the group’s equipment went up in smoke.

Flames spread to the centre, owned by social housing landlord Incommunities, leaving groups that meet there homeless, including the Action Group.

At first the disheartened group said it had to call the party off but after an emergency meeting, its core members have decided to make a go of it.

Chairman Sally Snowden said: “We can do it but we’re going to need lots of help. We’re getting in touch with the three local schools to see what they can make for us in way of decorations and we’ll be knocking on doors inviting people to come along and bring food and non-alcoholic drinks.

“What we could really do with though are businesses that will donate proper bunting and flags to line the street with and activities for the children like a bouncy castle would be great.

“It’s a historic occasion this wedding and we want our children in particular to experience this kind of get-together. It’s something they will remember for the rest of their lives. It’ll also give them a taste of what communities can be like and can achieve if they all pull together.”
