A man turned himself into a human torch… and survived.

A horrified member of the public dialled 999 after seeing the man pour what is thought to be petrol over his body and set fire to himself.

Fire crews, police and paramedics were called to the Canterbury Estate in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The man, who has not been named, was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary but miraculously suffered only minor burns to his arms and neck.

Witnesses reported seeing the man, in his 40s, wandering along Martin Road shortly after midnight carrying a petrol can.

A firefighter who attended the scene said: “We were called by a member of the public who saw the man pouring accelerant over himself.

“Initially, we didn’t know where the incident had taken place so we wanted to ensure that if it had taken place in a property then there wasn’t the risk of fire spreading. In the event, the incident happened in the street.”

When the emergency services arrived on the scene the man was no longer on fire. Police who attended said no crime had been committed and no further action would be taken.
