Students at Dixons Allerton Academy have been helping to build a wall which will take pride of place at the new £29 million school.

Teams of students battled it out during a masterclass in assembling a cavity wall, overseen by project contractor Wates Construction and joined by sub-contractor Keith Walton Brickwork.

The winning team of Hasnain Shakoor and Liam Bland, of year nine, and year ten student Amanda Skirrow, have now built a section of a wall which will be marked with a commemorative plaque and will become a permanent part of the 14,500 square metre academy building in Rhodesway , Allerton .

Head teacher Rachel Kidd said: “This has been an exciting experience for the students involved and one they won't forget. The commemorative plaque will serve as a permanent reminder that students of the academy helped to build this great building.”

Appointed by Bradford Council and its partner Integrated Bradford LEP, Wates began construction on the project in January. Once complete, the academy will include flexible teaching spaces and multi-use sports pitches, which will be available for community use.

Completion is scheduled for September 2013 in time for the new school year.
