A teenager who seriously injured three friends in a high-speed late-night crash has been locked up for 18 months.

A judge told Aaron Gaffey: “It would be viewed as an outrage if I did not send you to custody.”

Gaffey, 19, lost control of his Peugeot 306 on the A6037 Valley Road, between Bradford and Shipley, at 11pm on January 9 last year.

Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday his speed before the smash was estimated at 70 to 100mph. There was snow at the side of the road and it was barely above freezing.

Prosecutor Nigel Hamilton said Gaffey, of St Paul’s Avenue, Buttershaw, Bradford, “flashed past” another motorist as if she was standing still.

He lost control of the car after overtaking. It slid sideways on the wrong side of the road and struck an oncoming Vauxhall Corsa driven by Sophie Currie.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged, with one side of the Peugeot crushed and twisted.

Gaffey’s teenage friends, Lee Ealham, Daniel Patefield and Luke Gaughan, were trapped in the vehicle. It took firefighters an hour to cut them free.

Sophie Currie and her passenger, Jack Cavanagh, were also injured.

Gaffey pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, causing Mr Ealham and Mr Patefield grievous bodily harm and Mr Gaughan actual bodily harm.

His solicitor, Ray Singh, said Gaffey felt remorse for injuring his friends. He had not been drinking and he did not accept his speed was 100mph.

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC branded Gaffey’s driving “dangerous, reckless and appalling”. He was very fortunate that he and his friends were not killed.

Gaffey was banned from driving for three and a half years and must take an extended driving test to get his licence back.
