A film about Bradford playwright Andrea Dunbar has received multiple nominations for the British Independent Film Awards.
The Arbor, directed by Otley-born Clio Barnard, partly filmed on Buttershaw estate, has six nominations.
It follows last week’s success when the film won two British Film Institute awards. Miss Barnard won Best British Newcomer and the Sutherland Award for a debut director for The Arbor.
Miss Barnard, 45, broke down in tears while introducing The Arbor at a recent Bafta-organised screening in front of Andrea Dunbar’s family in Bradford.
The docu-drama, starring Jimi Mistry – currently competing in TV’s Strictly Come Dancing – and Bradford actress Natalie Gavin, features Andrea’s three children, including her eldest daughter Lorraine.
Miss Barnard recorded 90 hours of interviews with Andrea’s relatives and friends and actors, including Neil Dudgeon and George Costigan, lip-synch to their words. The scenes are interwoven with archive footage of Andrea and excerpts from her first play.
Miss Barnard said: “I felt a big responsibility with the film. We were glad to have the goodwill of the community.”
As reported in yesterday’s Telegraph & Argus, The King’s Speech, partly filmed at the Bradford Bulls stadium in Odsal, has received eight nominations for the British Independent Film Awards.
The film last month won the People’s Choice prize at the Toronto International Film Festival.
