Eleven Swedish medics have visited a centre for recovering drug addicts set up in Bradford only months ago and now held up as an example of best practice.
Senior clinicians visited the £850,000 Unity Recovery Centre in Manningham Lane yesterday.
The centre was opened by the Bridge Project, which is the district’s largest drugs charity and helped more than 250 people last year to get off drugs.
Jon Royle, the charity’s chief executive, said the project was recommended by pharmaceutical representatives in Sweden who had been asked by clinicians there for the best drug treatment facilities in the UK to learn from.
Mr Royle said Sweden was still using more of a medical- based approach to drug treatments, including prescribing methadone, rather than more forward thinking approaches employed by the Bridge Project, including counselling and looking at addressing patients’ other issues including poor housing/homelessness, unemployment, domestic violence, prostitution, social isolation and family breakdown.
