Free on-street car parking could be scrapped in Keighley, Bingley, Shipley and Ilkley in a move which would generate more than £250,000 in revenue for Bradford Council every year.

The authority says parking charges will improve access to town centres and stimulate trade by creating a higher turnover of customers.

But councillors and business leaders have reacted angrily to the proposals, which would see some free short-stay parking scrapped and charges of up to 60p per hour introduced.

Council officer Simon D’Vali has prepared a report for the Keighley Area Committee meeting on Thursday detailing specific proposals for Keighley and Ilkley. It states that managing the parking stock is essential to “the promotion, success and vitality of town centre activities”.

Details of the proposals in Bingley and Shipley have yet to be published.
