A pair of fundraisers are rambling in pyjamas as they walk the wintry Leeds-Liverpool Canal in aid of Children in Need this week.

Sponsored hikers Charlene Frear, of Keighley, and Angela Harker, of Saltaire, are striding out to raise cash – although they may have secret weapons to protect them from the cold.

“I work for Damart, so let’s say I know all about the magic of grade five thermals!” said mother-of-one Charlene, 26.

She and Angela, 23, decided to do their bit for charity for different reasons.

“I was in foster care for ten years and because people were there for me in the past, I thought it was only fair to do something in return,” Charlene said as she prepared for the walk which starts in Leeds on Sunday morning.

“And my reason is because my partner is ex-military, I’d like to do something that will benefit children in army families,” said Angela, who used to work at the Angel pub, Baildon.

So far they have raised £60 from running a cake stall outside the Co-op in Saltaire and had more than £30 donated by firefighters.

“We popped into Shipley Fire station and they were great, so a big thanks to them,” Charlene said.

They are camping out overnight and hope to do the 127 mile walk to Liverpool in three days.

And even if they get delayed, they are totally committed to crossing the line.

“I love walking and we should do it in the time, but we’ll finish it whatever, no doubt about that!,” said Charlene.
