Cottingley Gran urges people to sign petition fighting to keep open centre that saved grandson’s life

A campaigning grandmother has handed out hundreds of leaflets in a bid prevent the closure of a children’s heart unit which saved the life of her grandson.

Seventy-one-year-old Irene Pickles, of Roundhill Avenue, Cottingley, has been handing out the flyers encouraging local residents and parents to support The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund’s Save Our Surgery (SOS) campaign.

A national review is recommending shutting four or five of the units which perform cardiac operations on youngsters.

Four options have been put forward for public consultation but the unit at Leeds General Infirmary, which treats youngsters from across Yorkshire, including Mrs Pickles’s ten-year-old grandson Harrison Dunne, of Low Moor, only features in one of the options.

So far 250,000 people have signed a petition against the service being lost, which would mean sick youngsters instead travelling to Liverpool or Newcastle.

Mrs Pickles is now calling for people in the Bradford district to help the campaign reach its target of 500,000 names. As well as putting leaflets under windscreen wipers on cars, she has been busy contacting and visiting local primary schools to garner their support.

“I am working hard to raise the profile of the campaign,” she said.

“I am shattered but I am determined they will not close the place down – not if it is anything to do with me.”

Harrison was four months old when he was diagnosed with a rare heart condition called supraventricular tachycardia (SVT).

I do hope that they close this unit and thereby ensure that these critically ill children can be treated in specialist centres where their workload ensures that the doctors skills are kept at the highest level.
I urge your readers to ignore this well being woman - fortunately those who will make the decision have almost certainly made it and will not back down.

Why close this much-needed centre?
.
Instead of sending sick children elsewhere for treatment (hundreds of miles away), why not employ specialist doctors like you've mentioned, *locally*?

Given that Liverpool caters for the North West and parts of Wales, Newcastle ost of the far North, then it's essential that Leeds be kept open for Yorkshire and neighbouring counties.

It would be a crime to shut this down but the Tories have long been heartless, so they'd hardly be sympathetic, let alone show a semblance of empathy.

Big society eh, dave ?, maybe the many Heart surgeons that grace the land will just open up their own for free amongst the community. Or, how about reducing the amount of 'surgeries' that these crook, who masquerade, as Members of Parliament, operate.

John philips I agree!
Up with the partridge- unless you have been in the stressful situation of having a child require cardiac surgery I am not sure you can comment. Tell us- Have you? You seem to have a lot to say about it. The number of signatures collected to keep the unit open speaks volumes in the excellent services it has provided to many. I take it you will not be signing it. I hope the children in your family never need to use it

In referance to your comment i take it that you have no one in your family that would not be here today if this hospital was not here i think it is shocking that you would want a hospital like this to close in my oppinion it is a disgrace that you think that. What this lady is doing is fantastic and we need more people to do the same.

Thankfully I think up the partridge's views' are not held by many people which is shown by the volume of signatures and continued coverage in the press since this was announced in feb.
I urge all readers to sign the petition to keep this excellent unit open. If it closes, children will die en route to Newcastle and the government will have their blood on their hands.

And they are just wasting their time it WILL close and as I say it should. Clearly those who are critical of my views are just not thinking clearly and are wrong as is anyone who disagrees with anything I say. You MUST have doctors dealing with these cases all the time to keep their skill level high. dealing with a few cases is dangerous. It is nothing to do with Tories as that mindless half-wit Yosser Karim suggests - it is plain medical sense. I know about these things believe me - you do not.

Don't be absurd - you just show yourself up for what you are. This is about MEDICAL CARE not Tories, MPs or the price of coffee at ASDA.
Leeds is NOT a significantly large centre of excellence for this work. Anyway you lot in Bradford seem to be paranoid about Leeds anyway so I am surprised you are not all delighted it it closing

You have no idea what skills and knowledge I have in order to comment on this area. It is not "plain medical" sense as the data used by the review board was several years out of date. The doctors do not just deal with "a few cases" and DO deal with this all the time.
I know about these things- clearly you do not! Please share with us why you consider yourself qualified to comment on this and believe we are not.

OK then you asked.
a) I am more intelligent than most people who write on this forum, if not all of them.
b) You are talking from a subjective as opposed to an objective point of view
c) You do not listen - of course the doctors deal with these cases 'all the time' but clearly not enough to be safe
d) A decision is not being taken based on out of date statistics

And your comments clearly demonstrate how little knowledge you have on the subject. Maybe you are not as intelligent as you think you are. You maybe need to consider developing your emotional intelligence skills rather than your IQ!
