West Yorkshire's Chief Constable has warned that a significant number of young people in Britain are drinking themselves into oblivion.

Sir Norman Bettison claims cheap booze offers and lengthy opening hours are contributing to excessive drinking.

He was outlining his concerns at a conference in Leeds today. West Yorkshire Police and Safer Leeds are hosting the second National Alcohol Conference at Leeds Town Hall, to explore new ways of tackling disorder and problems associated with alcohol.

Sir Norman said: "Some young people are drinking themselves into oblivion, often using a cocktail of drink and drugs to get themselves into an almost unconscious state.

"What is happening raises a host of health, societal and policing issues."

The chief constable was expected to suggest that late-opening licensed premises might contribute towards safe detox facilities for those who have had too much. The polluters' as in other aspects of society should pay for the consequences of their business," said Sir Norman.

I totally agree with the chief constable's suggestion that licensed premises should contribute. Perhaps to the order of £200 per hour for each hour they remain open After 11.00pm. the money to go to the hospitals who have to treat these binge drinkers and also the police and ambulance service who have to scrape them off the streets.

that is a very narrow minded view, are you suggesting all the shops should contribute to pay for policing of shoplifters.
what about this suggestion, if you are treated for injuries as a result of too much alcohol, you pay for the treatment. Or a fixed penalty for anybody arrested, payable before release from custody

Shops already pay for policing shoplifters by employing their own security staff. They catch the criminals and then hand them over to the police. The only police I have seen actively policing a store is a cardboard cutout!
