Parents in Bradford are being warned to make sure they are using the correct car seats when travelling with children.

All children aged under 12 or under 135cm in height must travel in an appropriate car seat and be strapped in - by law.

To mark the first anniversary of the legislation Bradford Council road safety officers are set to hold a special assembly at Copthorne Primary school in Great Horton on Tuesday for pupils and parents from throughout the district. A model car will be used to highlight the dangers to children if they are not strapped in correctly.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, the Council's executive member for environment and culture, said: "Unfortunately many parents are still travelling with children not strapped in or not in child seats and this is very dangerous. In 2006, 107 children under the age of 15 were injured as car passengers in Bradford and 76 of these were under the age of 12.

"Using an appropriate seat can mean the difference between life and death and we want parents to get this important message."

Information about using car seats is being sent out to about 7,000 Year One pupils across the district. They will also receive a book called Teddy Takes a Tumble which tells the story of a teddybear who bangs his head when he is not strapped into a moving car.

Naila Zaffar, head teacher at Copthorne Primary, said: "We hope as many parents as possible will be able to come along to the assembly as it's vitally important that adults know the measures they should be taking when transporting children in their cars."

if you stand and watch any busy flow of traffic, you will see kids not fastened in at all, adults not wearing seat belts, and drivers using hand held mobile phones. but dont linger too long or you are likely to get run over by pavement using cyclists or taxis.

I remember shouting to one parent to get seatbelts on, the stupid women put hers on and left her kids unstrapped in the back seat.
Parents who flout the laws which save lives should have their children taken into care and made to pay for their keep.
If there's a law for it then there's a reason that laws been made.

bradford is full of 'except for me people'
every day I come across people who think the following rules don't apply to them:

1.don't spit in the street
2.don't park in bus lanes
3.don't jump lights
4.don't drop litter

I agree with all the above.
Everyday you see people flouting the law, but they never get caught, but then you never see police around to stop them!

if the list of possible punishments was suitable for purpose, the deterent factor might be effective.

i walk to school with my 4 year old daughter every day rain or snow,i see lots of children climing out of the cars with no car seats, when it is bad weather they all cram in to such small cars sometimes with 6 kids in the back along with parents,my child goes to a prominantly aisan school and its mainly the aisan partents i see with no carseats.i am sorry if this doesnt sound right but all the white parents seem to have carseats.i have a car along with 2 carseats for both my girls, but i choose to walk,it only takes 10 minutes, most of the kids live local, would they rather risk there kids life aswel as there own or walk a quick 10 minutes.its pathetic.i think someone needs to stand outside schools to make sure these requirementsa are met an letters need to be sent home to parents regulary to remind them.i went on a child seat car safety course which only took 2 hours.it helped alot, and had a big impact on how i percieve the car seat law.i think the course should be offered widley.
