THE official Ilkley flag for this year’s Tour de Yorkshire cycling event is now flying high over the centre of the town.

It was raised at a ceremony on Thursday attended by pupils from Ilkley Grammar School who are all keen cyclists, alongside residents and business representatives.

The flag, which was presented to Bradford Council by Welcome to Yorkshire, will fly in the town to help celebrate the race coming to the district on May 4 and 6.

Stage two of this year’s event will have a summit finish at the Cow and Calf Rocks in Ilkley on Friday, May 4, and the town will also see the women’s race finish in the same place the same day.

The route for stage four of the men’s race includes sections through Oxenhope, Haworth, Oakworth, and Laycock, with a ‘King of the Mountains’ section at Goose Eye on Sunday, May 6.

Thousands of spectators are expected to visit the area to line the route of the race, with local communities taking part in Best Dressed and Land Art competitions.
