AN early morning burglary attempt at a supermarket was foiled when a “smoke cloak” was deployed.

Police and fire services were called to the Tesco Express store on Otley Road, Undercliffe, at 3.53am yesterday following reports the device, which deploys a large amount of fog in the event of a break-in, had been set off.

Police found that a window of the supermarket, which is on the junction with Northcote Road, had been damaged, but it did not appear that anything had been taken from inside.

It is thought the break-in attempt happened between 3.38am and 3.45am, and police enquiries are continuing.

A police spokesman said: “Anyone who witnessed the incident has been asked to contact police on 101 quoting crime reference number 13180186250 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
