A GUISELEY venue’s licence is to be reviewed after a number of incidents linked to its upstairs wine bar.

Leeds City Council is to hold a hearing next month to review the licence for Zen Rendezvous, in The Green, after a request by police relating to the first-floor Bar Fusion.

A document on the Leeds council website states: “Zen Rendezvous has drawn attention from West Yorkshire Police for a considerable period of time due to the nature and frequency of incidents which are linked to the first floor wine bar of the premises.”

The hearing will take place on Thursday, May 24. Written representations should be made before the deadline of Wednesday, May 2.

The decision to review the licence met with mixed reactions.

Shel Wilkinson, 29, of Baildon, said she was renting a house on nearby Green Terrace but had decided not to buy the property.

She said: “It’s a ridiculous place to have a dance bar, situated near to such a residential area and classy restaurants.”

Mrs Wilkinson said she faced a host of problems including trespassing and bottles being thrown at her garage.

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said she had found empty drug packets in her garden.

“I saw people engaging in sexual acts, as well as vomit and wee on my car,” she said.

“The tipping point was when I caught someone stood on the roof of my car, jumping from car to car.”

She moved from the area but said she did not hold Fusion directly responsible.

She said: “However, they have to accept some sort of responsibility for allowing punters to come so close to nearby residential houses.”

But others defended Fusion. One resident, who also wished to remain anonymous, said: “Most of the reasons aren’t actually Fusion’s fault.

“It’s about people being brought up with respect. How many young people in Guiseley cause problems?”

They pointed towards trouble with youths outside the local McDonald’s as an example, which has become a hot-spot for anti-social behaviour.

Ollie Mouatt, 20, of Yeadon, said Fusion was “good local nightlife for local people and is a nice cheap alternative to going into Leeds or Headingley every weekend”.

Licence holder Alan Yeung said: “We are instructing our solicitors on our behalf and have given the reasons we believe we are a good operator. We are challenging the review, but I don’t have much to add at this point until after the hearing.”

West Yorkshire Police said they would not comment until after the hearing.
