A NUMBER of events are being held around Bradford for Eid to mark the end of Ramadan.

Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of a month of fasting during daylight hours for the Muslim community begins in the evening on Sunday, June 25, and ends in the evening of Monday 26.

To celebrate the end of Ramadan, feasts, festivals and celebrations are being held in Bradford and all over the world.

MANNINGHAM

Community prayers are being held at Lister Park on either Sunday or Monday at 9am as part of the annual Eid in the Park event.

The date is not yet set for the event, organised by the Masjid al-Sunnah, as Eid coincides with the new moon.

More than a thousand people are expected for the event in Manningham.

Mahroof Mohammed, one of the organisers, said: "The prayer is for everyone to attend and will be following by a breaking of the fast.

"It is the oldest Eid event in Bradford, we've been doing this since 2004 and it has grown year on year.

"It is tradition on Eid to hold prayers in the open air rather than in the mosque."

Elsewhere, another Eid in the Park event is being held on Infirmary Fields in Lumb Lane, from 9.30am on Eid day. All are welcome to attend, and money is being raised on the day to be donated to Interpal, the Leeds Road based charity working to provide relief in Palestine.

UNDERCLIFFE

On Monday, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in Bradford is holding its Eid prayers and feast at the Al Mahdi mosque in Undercliffe.

CITY CENTRE

At the Leisure Exchange in the city centre, Eid celebrations are being held form 4pm to 7.30pm on Monday.

There will be Bollywood dancing in the courtyard every hour to entertain the crowds, along side the restaurants, cinema and bowling alley.

Jessica Keighley, a spokesman for the Leisure Exchange, said: “We’re really looking forward to celebrating Eid in Bradford, we’ve brought in great entertainment to celebrate the occasion and there will be lots of offers & fun from all our tenants.”

Meanwhile, The Broadway Shopping Centre will hold a weekend of food, festivities and fun for the family on Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25.

A number of dishes will be served up on the malls of The Broadway.

Parents are encouraged to bring their children along to show off their cookie decorating skills. Each child will get two cookies to decorate with colourful icing and tasty decorations, which they can then take home with them.

Music will come from Ronak Mela Baja, who will hold free dance classes for families and shoppers.

Two henna artists will paint shoppers’ hands, with classes held every hour, so that shoppers can learn the craft for themselves.

Ian Ward, general manager of The Broadway, said: "We’ve put a lot of work into this at The Broadway, and it looks set to be a very special weekend.

"Whether it’s to try a few tasty delights, learn some new crafts, or just to enjoy the great atmosphere, we are proud to welcome everyone from the amazing city of Bradford and beyond to come and join in with the truly wonderful festival spirit.’

BRADFORD EID FESTIVAL

Next weekend, Bradford Eid Festival is taking place at Bradford Moor Park, and is set to be the biggest Eid festival in the North of England.

The free event, on Saturday, July 1, and Sunday 2, will have fairground rides, live music and poetry, Henna art, a bazaar, and a food section with Halal treats from around the world.

Last year more than 12,000 people attended, and organisers are expecting the figure to be even higher this year.

Mohammed Atique, organiser, said: “After a long month of fasting, praying and charity, we felt the community deserved an enjoyable time where they can come together and celebrate Eid with their loved ones.

“Everyone involved in making the festival happen are volunteers and we’re doing this for the love of the city and its people.

"Over the last few months, we’ve seen communities across the country unite and come together following tragic attacks in London and Manchester as well as the horrific London fire.

"We, as proud people from Yorkshire, want to show the same message of unity and that’s why we’re putting on an entertaining event that’s open to the whole community – so together, we can all enjoy the blessings of Eid."

BRADFORD MOOR

Also taking place in Bradford Moor, on Wednesday, July 5, is an Eid dinner at Habib's restaurant in Killinghall Road. Tickets cost £10, with under fives going free, and is being hosted by Healthcare4all International.

SAFETY ADVICE

The emergency services in West Yorkshire have also issued a joint message ahead of Eid.

Firefighter Abed Qureshi said: "My advice is around cooking, do not leave any cooking unattended and if you are wearing loose clothing ensure it is tied back and kept away from any flammable sources."

Basharat Rafiq, from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, added: "My advice is to be safe and to drive very carefully."
