Nineteen people have been arrested and 31 vehicles seized in a major police crackdown on illegal road users in Bradford.

In the last three months, more than 1,000 drivers were hit with penalty notices by police working on the Bradford District Roads Policing Strategy.

The £30,000 scheme, funded by the Safer Communities Partnership, working with the West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership, issued 1,023 penalty notices between January and March, in Bradford, Keighley and Shipley.

Of those, 457 were for speeding, 153 for not wearing seatbelts (including children), 82 for using mobile phones (including HGV drivers) and 30 for illegally tinted windows.

Others were for driving without insurance, bus lane contravention, dangerous overtaking, illegally carrying drugs, parking obstruction, dangerous parts, illegal registration plates and driving without due care.

Also picked up were men on the run, including one wanted in connection with a burglary.

Isn't this what the police etc are paid to do?
Why should it be such a newsworty event when they actually do what they get paid for?

I agree with alan cassie's comments. This should be what the Police should be doing on a daily basis. But in this day and age they have to be seen to be giving the media information to justify themselves.

It is good that the media is focusing on positive actions of the police, as the stories more often look at negative aspects, and ignore the good job that our police force does in the community.

I'm only surprised it took so long to reach these figures. If you were to stand on any street corner of Bradford I have observed that in over 10% of vehicles that drive past the driver will not be wearing a seat belt and that almost as many will be on the phone.
At one time it seemed to be just young men who ignored the regulations regarding seat belts but recently young women appear to have started to copy them. However it seems that young women are the worst for using their mobile phones, maybe it's something to do with multi tasking!

So what we are really saying here is that the Police are doing their job they are paid to do. One thought, these are good results, imagine having the budgets to employ more Police officers (not PSO's)- the results would be EVEN better.

If the police want a really easy result let them stand on Market Street. It is usually full of cars which have ignored the buses only sign at its junction with Cheapside and many of the drivers do not wear seatbelts, and a good number are also using their mobile phones

If the police want another really easy result and help to reduce drivers' blood presure they should walk the half-mile from their Keighley headquarters and slam the idiots who jump lanes on the Victora roundabout. There are near misses here every day when drivers in the laft lane, who should turn towards Keighley, barge out to go forward. It's not all tourists either, there are lots of local lorries and taxis/private hire. This would go much further to promoting road safety than picking up a handful of poseurs with "excessively-tinted" windows!

R Willsher - please leave race out of the debate form once- the focus here is crime prevention- and if this can in some way bring insurance costs down (i doubt this very much ) them i am all for it. Insurance companies dont take any notice of positive policing actions. They interested in money and profits.
lets hope more are caught and the police weed out the criminals and unlawful drivers
