Vandals attack Sir Titus statue

Vandals have sprayed graffiti on a statue of Saltaire's founder Sir Titus Salt in the third attack of its kind in the past four months.

Offensive slogans have been daubed all over the statue of the village's well-respected benefactor, which stands proudly in Robert's Park in the World Heritage site.

Billy Ricketts, the long-serving grounds man at Saltaire Cricket Club, discovered the vandalism, as well as graffiti scrawled on walls next to the Half Moon Café, when he returned to work today following the bank holiday.

He said he believed the culprits are the same youths responsible for a similar spate of vandalism just four months ago when Sir Titus's statue was completely covered in blue paint and another attack about seven weeks ago when the statue was daubed with insulting graffiti.

A frustrated Mr Ricketts has taken his concerns about growing levels of drug-taking, under-age drinking and antisocial behaviour in Robert's Park to the West Yorkshire Police Chief Constable, the Shipley Neighbourhood Policing Team and Shipley MP Philip Davies.

He is blaming the police for failing to act on repeated reports and is now calling on the force to act as a matter of urgency.

Mr Ricketts said: "The park is virtually a no go area at night. The police say there is nothing going on but there is something going on. It is horrendous.

"We have got a lot of anti-social behaviour and graffiti by individuals living on the estate but the police will not do anything about it. I was told to report every crime but nothing has come of it.

"There is also under-age drinking and drug abuse - I have got all the empty vodka bottles and cannabis packets to prove it.

"Now the statue has been done again. They have sprayed names in blue paint and chalked all over it."

Mr Davies said he was appalled by yobs carrying out such "mindless vandalism" and called for the police to take tough action against them.

He said: "I have spoken to Mr Ricketts on a number of occasions about this and it is getting incredible frustrating for him. These mindless yobs who go and vandalise are an absolute menace. I hope that the police can track them down and punish them."

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, the council's portfolio holder for the environment and culture, said: "The vandalism is just part of the situation down there. The lottery bid is to improve renovation and regeneration at Robert's Park and give much more ownership to the community living around the park."

Inspector John Tatham, head of the Shipley and Bingley Neighbourhood Policing Team, admitted that there have been problems at the park in recent months.

He said that it was difficult for the police to act unless the public helped them every step of the way to gather evidence against the perpetrators.

He said: "If there is anything going on at the park, we need to know about it and we will investigate it to our full capacity."

I am absolutely sick & tired of hearing about yobbo youths doing this & that, stealing, vandalism, violence, anti-social behaviour, etc, etc. The Police do nothing about it. It is happening all over the country in towns & cities everywhere. I wouldn't be surprised if people took this into their own hands! Vigilante time? These yobs need a good beating.

I and a couple of others (independently, not mob handed) took the trouble to stand up to some'bored yoofs' who were vandalising our local church. Within a few months, whilst calling the feds/PCSOs at the same time it has to be said, it has dried up to a rarity now.

Action has to be taken when you see this kind of thing. You have to very careful obviously and mindful of the little darlings human rights, but you CAN beat them.... oh yes.

Indeed. So I suppose really what I was trying to say was; yes, sometimes you have to take things into your own hands. If the police won't do the job for you 'cos they're too busy/tired/lazy then find a few like-minded individuals (it won't take many, just persistance and a bit of time) and see the beggars off!

The Council shouldn't need to 'pass ownership back to the peope' and all that PC management blx. It's ours already! Stand up for you and yours! Come on people, get a grip!!

As a resident of the area, I must say that I see the police patrol the area regulary, on foot and in a patrol car. I speak often to the local police community officer, and I can state that our area is not as bad as you would understand from Mr Ricketts. We have neighbourhood forum meetings, and nothing is ever mentioned to the police about problems in the park. Mr Ricketts with all due respect, moans on and on. The local youths do egg him on and wind him up, but this is because he accuses them of wrong doing, when in fact they are innocent. Mr Ricketts could you be specific about what is happening? I think you could be the cause of some of this, may be you should retire.

well done 'concerned'. i often see police patrol in the area, i don't feel roberts park is an unsafe place to be. i agree that the vandalism shouldn't be there and the culprits should be punished however we all know that getting a conviction is very difficult without admissions. I am sure the police are aware who is commiting the problems but without evidence and statements their hands are tied!!!

Being a resident, I am proud to come from an area which is low in Crime, and the local youths have respect for the law. Graffitti is all over, and yes, Roberts Park is neglected due to the funding bid, the shelters are left like derelic buildings. I share concerned views, and jim hollow, I think the police do a splendy job in this area, and are always visible, how many other area's can say the same. The fact is that Roberts Park, like many, are not lit, this was a decision taken by Bradford Council, in no doubt a cost cutting exercise. I feel safer walking in the PArk in the dark, that Shipley town centre after 6pm. I would like to thank the police for the work they do in the area. Crime has been reduced over the past few years.. these figures are iin black and white. And i am sure if the police knew who the culprits were action would be taken. They need evidence.. they need to prove offences.

Were you lot never teenagers seems to me you have never been young.
What these young people have done is wrong and yes they should be made to pay for the cleaning of the damage they have caused.
What have these young people got to do now adays?
You could go bowling or to the pictures, parents wont see much change out of £20.
Teenagers are told they are unhealthy if they sit infront of a computer/tv.We complain about their kind of music.Did you never play heavy rock when you were young?
Youth clubs are shut down. You cant get people to run things ie,St Johns ambulance, scouts, gui

des to mention just a few.
Young people need to be able to express themselves.
Give these young people something to do.Whats the point of having a school for example and only opening it 9.00-3.00. We pay for these places with our taxes they could provided alot more for our communities for young people to do.
Take the bull by the horn as they say next time you go to your neighbourhood forum demand they provide more for your community.Invite these young people let them have a say about what they want.
Do we need a lake in the city centre NO but young people need more.

Stop!

Thats What I expected someone to say,why should local taxpayers pay.
Well there are two ways to look at this problem.
1 Do nothing and use taxpayers money to pay for the damage and moan about what these young people are doing.
2 Use some of the taxpayers money to invest in these young people and let them have something that could give them a hobby or even a career
and a future.
Think I would choose the second option.
It would more than likely cost less and remember these young people will become taxpayers themselves.

People need to wake up to the problem and address it with ideas to stop it not just sit there and moan.

Well I for one thing think the police do a good job with the red tape they have to put up with. Don't blame the police for the way the courts deal with offender's. The police have NOTHING to do with anything after a person has been charged, it's up to the CPS and the courts then! Yes I see my local officers on foot. Perhaps David from Bradford has his eyes closed!!

Yes these youths have done wrong, Hand the video over to the police, they are only on the other end of the phone, or it you look on the internet, you can email your local officer, or is that too difficult for you!

The police need your support, not your unfounded fault finding Mr Perfect. Get a life.

You to seem to have all the answers so tell us how you will solve these problems.
1.Put them in to care.
Going to cost the taxpayer more.
2.Get the parents to do something.
Parents dont care now.
3.Send them to court for an ASBO.
Some young people see this as a badge of honour.
Thats 3 things you cant do.Also remember their human rights.

Cant wait to see your ideas.

2-in that case will we have to learn to live with it?
3-totally agree.
maybe we should scrap the EEC humah rights bill and compile our own.
