Mary, 92, returns to Macbeth role at Bingley Little Theatre
8:10am Wednesday 16th May 2012 in Aire Valley
Mary Newton
Mary Newton first played one of the witches in Macbeth in 1949 – and more than 60 years later she has returned to the role, aged 92.
A founder member of Bingley Little Theatre, Mary started treading the boards as a girl and is now a life vice-president of the society.
In her 20s, she was in a Bingley Little Theatre production of Shakespeare’s tragedy, as one of the three witches whose prophecies to Macbeth on a stormy heath drive the would-be king’s ultimately doomed hunger for power.
Now, Mary is again playing one of the ‘weird sisters’ in the play.
“Mary has spent most of her life with Bingley Little Theatre, both on stage and helping out in other areas.
“She was the membership secretary for 30 years,” said society member Elizabeth Evans.
“She gave up performing about 20 years ago, but wanted to return for this part.
“She has a wonderful energy and we’re delighted to have her back on stage.”
Macbeth runs at Bingley Arts Centre until Saturday.
