Disabled Leslie McQuade is demanding an apology after he was injured when he fell through a chair at Shipley Town Hall.

The 54-year-old had been offered a seat while he waited at the rent office but it collapsed under him.

He said: “The woman called me over and beckoned to me to sit down.

“I pulled up the chair, sat on it and ended up on the floor. I don’t know who was more shocked at first, her or me. She just burst into tears. I couldn’t move my leg. I was in agony.”

Mr McQuade, who is on heart medication, said other staff came to see what had happened and an official-looking man jotted down his name and phone number to be put in the accident book.

Mr McQuade said: “I felt as though I was some sort of side-show.

“They got me an ambulance and after X-rays doctors said I’d torn two ligaments and damaged the cartilage. I’m on crutches and need physio every week now.”

Mr McQuade, who is living in a caravan at Esholt while waiting for a disabled bungalow to become available, added: “I’ve not heard a word from the Town Hall since.

“No-one’s rung to see how I’m doing or to say sorry.

“I think that’s disgusting. The Council is supposed to care for the community, instead they just stuff you in an accident book, close it and hope you’ll just go away.

“I won’t. I’m thinking of suing them. I’ve seen better chairs in a skip.”

A Bradford Council spokesman said: “This was an unfortunate incident but our staff did everything they could to help Mr McQuade and keep him comfortable immediately following the accident.

“We called for an ambulance which attended within 15 minutes and we also took action to ensure that his car was taken to his home.

“We haven’t contacted Mr McQuade since this day and apologise for this oversight.

“We have checked all the chairs and the particular chair involved in the incident has been removed.”
